Job Title: Ranger Station Host/Maintenance Internship (1-2 Positions)

Duration: May 16th to August 15th (Some may work until September 1 or later)
About Us: Alaska State Parks is seeking enthusiastic individuals for Ranger Station Host/Maintenance positions at the Halibut Cove Lagoon Ranger Station in Kachemak Bay State Park. This unique opportunity allows interns to contribute to the operation and maintenance of facilities in a breathtaking wilderness setting.
Position: Ranger Station Host/Maintenance Intern

Main Tasks:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of Halibut Cove Lagoon Ranger Station, including public-use cabins, latrines, dock, campsites, and boardwalks.
  • Provide assistance to the public with inquiries and directions.
  • Support Park Ranger or Park Specialist with various park and trail projects.
  • Maintain facilities, including a gravity feed water system, hydroelectric/solar/wind power inverter system, latrines, dock, and public-use cabins.
  • Conduct brush cutting, sawyer work, carpentry tasks, and maintain the area around the station.
  • Perform visitor counts and provide necessary information.
  • Hike trails, perform minor maintenance, and assist with ADFG stocking program.
  • Demonstrate small boat operation skills, with a small skiff available for work-related projects and recreational use within the lagoon.

Required Skills:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a remote setting.
  • Good physical condition and ability to lift and carry tools and packs up to 45lbs.
  • Working knowledge of basic hand and power tools.

Desired Skills:

  • Public relations skills; act as an ambassador to park visitors.
  • Maintenance skills, including gravity feed water system and power inverter system.
  • Carpentry skills for facility maintenance.
  • Familiarity with small boat operation.
  • Preference given to host “couple” who will work together.
  • Must be physically capable of steep climbs and long walks with up to a forty-pound pack.

Allowance/Housing:

  • Monthly food subsistence payment.
  • Housing and cooking facilities provided at the Ranger Station during the workweek.
  • Shared bunk/living space provided in Homer on days off.

Transportation:

  • Must provide transportation to Homer, Alaska.
  • Group use of a Sate vehicle in Homer for shopping and State business.
  • RV or motorhome owners may park at facilities for use on days off in Homer.

Training Provided:
One to two-week orientation training, including safety training, basic emergency procedures, and boating safety.
Time Commitment: Preference to applicants available from May 16th to August 15th.
Schedule: Generally, a ten-day on, four-day off work schedule at 37.5 hours per week, subject to variation
